Teardrops
Let me be absolutely clear; these high holy days are kicking my ass. Certainly you all have noticed my weak levels of posting… you have, haven’t you?
Anyhoo, since the Toestubber (that’s me) will be mostly incommunicado until a couple days after Xmas – way up in the hills of beige-ass Fresno County – here are a handful more totally soul-groovin’ songs by the Equals to help you cope. To paraphrase Sara Lee, nobody doesn’t love this band. So cheer up, put on your dancing ‘fro and let’s get to mingering! And be sure to have a Merry whatever, suckas.
The Equals – “Honey Bee”
The Equals – “The Skies Above”
The Equals – “Just Me and You”
The Equals – “Michael and His Slipper Tree”

while you’re in FRESNO enjoying warm yuletidings, wishing you could blow your head off, i’ll be in the idiotic state of MARYLAND, wishing i could blow my head off… or yours

What makes it so miserable is it’s the season of giving. I stopped giving and my Christmas became merry as shit. To quote an Indian friend, “Exactly what is a yuletide anyway, and how do you make it gay.” I believe it was born that way.

[...] The mighty Toestubber beat me to the punch on this record by a couple of months, but since those tracks were gone I decided to go ahead and rehash. The Maids were from Berkeley, CA and released this lone single in 1979. End of story. Actually that aint the end of the story at. In fact, the whole sordid story of the band, their single, and the legion of collector scum can be found right here. In the LA Weekly article an incredulous John McCormick (singer and guitarist) asks a fan why the record was so in demand, to which the fan responds: “I’m not sure, but it’s a rocking a-side. nice fuzzed out guitar”. I won’t argue that – the guitar has a beautifully filthy sound, the drums are crazy, and both tracks are smoking. As a result, boths cuts from the Maids Maids in Bataan have been included in the KBD series (at this point what hasn’t?) Great stuff. [...]

[...] How many times can this be posted? Something I Learned Today and Toestubber have posted it. So is there need for a third post? Apperantly. Maids super catchy two sider that’s on my Top 10 of all time faves. From the intro of Back To Bataan with Chuck Menses drumsticks fumbling till the homoerotic lyric to the incredible great guitar sound it’s as hard to resist as Baccaras Yes Sir I Can Boogie or Abbas Dancing Queen. A must read is the incredible story that was featured in LA Weekly:”From start to finish we were in the studio for four hours, and the session cost us a total of $82. We were now ready to conquer the Mabuhay.“. This was the Maids one and only studio recording that finally got it to vinyl.
