Music Killed Them

Via Champagne Wade at BBQ Productions comes a link to this huge, gorgeous gallery of stock cassette tapes. Cheers to whatever Japanese madman did this. It’s hard to believe these once-holy spooled cartridges have been completely superceded by digital tricks. Yes, I know the cassette will limp along in an 8-track sort of way, but to the ascendant culture these might as well be little plastic sculptures. They are, in a way.

Click here for the link. Warning: zillions of photos on one webpage. If you’ve only got dial-up, I’d almost tell you not to bother. (Almost.)

so provocative and sexy! i feel my heart swell as i recognize my own among that cornocopia of cassettes and my pulse quickens remembering the satisfaction of well-taped albums, weighted with value in my sweaty palm, the obsessive concern with labelling and storage. my eyes grow damp remembering one delightfully cheap cassette, treasured as a weedhead’s keepsake, lost forever when crushed beneath the passenger side bucket seat of secondhand sedan…

I, too, feel deep affection towards these cassettes. They were destructible, but it took work. Nowadays all it takes to ruin a CD is a properly placed grain of sand.
I recognized several beautiful models from my past. [sob]
